Abstract
In 1959, the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands was discovered, the largest gas field in Europe and the tenth largest in the world. Up until then, the existence of significant oil and gas resources in North West Europe or the North Sea had been ruled out by leading geologists. The Dutch discovery, however, changed the European energy landscape. Europe opened up for offshore and onshore hydrocarbon explorations and the switch from town gas to natural gas gained momentum.
