Zusammenfassung
Thorstein Veblens Theorie der feinen Leute bestimmt den „Standort und Wert der müßigen Klasse als ökonomischen Faktor im modernen Leben“ (S. 19). Diese theoretische Standortbestimmung der „müßigen“ Klasse – also einer Klasse, die nicht arbeitet und ihre Zeit ausschließlich mit „unproduktiven“ Tätigkeiten und hoch spezialisierten Konsumgewohnheiten verbringt – erfolgt als Kombination historischer und sozialevolutionärer Analysen. Veblen geht zunächst davon aus, dass gesellschaftliche Entwicklung evolutionären Prinzipien folgt und dass zwei grundsätzliche Stadien der Entwicklung voneinander unterschieden werden können: „wilde Völker“ und unterschiedliche Stufen einer „barbarischen Kultur“ (S. 25).
