In Morals and Markets untersucht Viviana Zelizer die sozialen Voraussetzungen der massenhaften Verbreitung von Lebensversicherungen in den USA. Ihre zentrale These ist, dass neue Produkte ein Mindestmaß an gesellschaftlicher Legitimation benötigen, um sich auf Märkten zu etablieren. Zelizers Ausgangspunkt ist, dass vorhergehende Ansätze einseitig Wirtschaftswachstum, Urbanisierungs- und Mortalitätsraten sowie die Kaufkraft der Bevölkerung analysierten (9f.), den „impact of noneconomic factors on the adoption of life insurance“ aber kaum berücksichtigen (S. 25).
