Marcel Mauss (1872-1950) verfasst den Essai sur le don kurz nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, und er veröffentlicht ihn im ersten Doppelheft der neuen Reihe von L’Année sociologique, die er nach dem Krieg leitet. In Die Gabe, so der Titel der deutschen Übersetzung, skizziert Mauss auf der Grundlage einer Theorie der Wirtschaft und der Gesellschaft die Gabe als die dreifache Verpflichtung „Geben – Empfangen – Erwidern“.
