Abstract

The trend towards governance research in higher education research has been triggered by New Public Management reforms of higher education systems since the 1980s. The relationship between higher education, state and society has changed tremendously from the early days of the old university to the current higher education systems in the Western world. Universities were established before the first nation states existed.
