Gender Strikes Back

A Paper on the Boundaries between Male and Female Preschool Teachers in a Figurational Logic View

Abstract

This paper argues that the preschool setting is a gender-related territory, which provides rules of exclusion and inclusion. The construction of a gender territory is discussed in its specific and effective mode of action. Within this, a set of examples from the collected data will be presented. In a next step, the boundaries and the boundary-making of the preschool gender territory is presented in more detail. Finally, the treatment of the concepts of gender territory and boundaries is reviewed using the figurational “balance of power” conception of Norbert Elias. This artifice enables us to discuss gender relations in preschool from a minor feminist point of view and furthermore to incorporate different gender-relevant concepts like “doing gender” and adjacent concepts such as boundary-making.
