Abstract
With approximately 37 000 inhabitants the Principality of Liechtenstein is Europe’s fourth smallest country. Liechtenstein has a longstanding sovereign history which goes back to 1806 when Napoleon established the Confederation of the Rhine. Due to its smallness, however, Liechtenstein has always been closely integrated with its surrounding countries. From 1852 to 1919 Liechtenstein was in a customs and currency union with the Austrian monarchy. After this customs and currency union ended with World War I, Liechtenstein has built up an even closer regional union with Switzerland.
