Zusammenfassung

Robert K. Merton (1910–2003) war nach eigenem Bekunden kein Kultursoziologe, aber er veröffentlichte Studien, die man mit gutem Grund auch zur Kultursoziologie rechnen kann, und sein umfangreiches Werk enthält eine Vielzahl von Begriffen und Theorieskizzen, die von Kultursoziologen aufgegriffen werden können. Zu Ersteren gehören die Monografien Mass Persuasion: The Social Psychology of a War Bond Drive (1946), On the Shoulders of Giants: A Shandean Postscript (1965) und The Travels and Adventures of Serendipity: A Study in Sociological Semantics and the Sociology of Science (2004); zu Letzteren u. a. die Begriffe Matthäus-Effekt, Thomas-Theorem, selbsterfüllende Prognose, Ethos der Wissenschaften oder socially expected durations.

Man wird davon ausgehen können, dass die Nichterwähnung Mertons in den beiden programmatischen Texten kein Fall von inverser „cryptomnesia“, also kein unabsichtliches Plagiat, war, sondern eher unter das „palimpsestic syndrom“ fällt, wo eine etablierte Bedeutung ganz absichtlich durch eine andere überschrieben werden soll. Mit beiden Formen abweichenden Verhaltens von Wissenschaftlern hat sich Merton im Kontext seiner Studien über Mehrfachentdeckungen auseinandergesetzt: Merton (1973, S. 402–409 bzw. 123, Fn. und 1976b).

    Ironischerweise hätte es fast genauso gut das „Mead-Theorem“ heißen können, weist RKM doch in „History and Systematics of Sociological Theory“ in einer Fußnote darauf hin, dass George H. Mead den gleichen Gedanken nur ein wenig restriktiver formulierte: „If a thing is not recognized as true, then it does not function as true in the community“ Merton (1967, S. 19, Fn. 40; noch ausführlicher in 1995b, S. 383).

    Die starke kulturelle Abhängigkeit konnte ich fünf Jahre später anhand deutscher und österreichischer Zeitungen demonstrieren: „das Role Model“ hatte damals den Atlantik noch nicht überquert und „di(y)sfunktional“ war noch nicht einmal ein Fremdwort, während Lebensstil und Lebensstandard schon eingedeutscht waren und gerne benutzt wurden; ähnlich stark wurde „Charisma“ auf beiden Seiten des Atlantik benutzt, während die „Entfremdung“ zwar den deutschsprachigen Journalisten flott von der Hand ging, während ihre amerikanischen Gegenüber weder das Fremdwort noch dessen Übersetzung nutzten (Fleck 2000).

    Die Zahl allein sagt wenig. Vergleicht man die Merton-Zitate mit einigen seiner Alterskollegen, ist der Unterschied größer, als der Zufall es erlauben würde. Talcott Parsons 66, David Riesman 42, John K. Galbraith 56, Kingsley Davis 36, C. Wright Mills 31, Thorsten Veblen 28. Nur John M. Keynes übertrifft ihn mit mehr als 80 Einträgen.
