Zusammenfassung

Es gibt nicht viele politikwissenschaftliche Bücher, die eine so große Wirkung entfalten konnten, wie das von James G. March und Johan P. Olsen 1989 veröffentlichte Buch Rediscovering Institutions: The Organizational Basis of Politics. Das dahinterstehende, bereits in den 50er-Jahren begonnene und konsequent vorangetriebene wissenschaftliche Programm des Neoinstitutionalismus hat indessen nicht weniger als „the next revolution“ (Goodin/Klingemann 1998: 25) in der Politikwissenschaft auf den Weg gebracht: Der Neoinstitutionalismus gilt heute – auch dank der Beharrlichkeit und Konsequenz der beiden Protagonisten dieses Ansatzes – als Mainstream, und in den Cantus firmus „We are all institutionalists now“ (Aspinwall/Schneider 2000: 1) können mittlerweile fast alle Politikwissenschaftler (und nicht nur diese) einstimmen.
