Zusammenfassung

„Tom […] begab sich zum Marktplatz der kleinen Stadt, wo sich einer Verabredung gemäß zwei ‚militärische Formationen‘ der Jungen getroffen hatten, um sich eine Schlacht zu liefern. Tom war der General der einen Armee, Joe Harper, ein Busenfreund von ihm, General der anderen. Diese beiden großen Heerführer ließen sich nicht etwa herab, persönlich am Kampf teilzunehmen – das kam vielmehr der unbedeutenderen Menge zu –, sondern sie saßen zusammen auf einer Bodenerhebung und leiteten die Operationen auf dem Schlachtfeld durch Befehle, die von Adjutanten überbracht wurden. Nach langem, hartem Kampf errang Toms Armee einen großen Sieg. Nun wurden die Toten gezählt, die Gefangenen ausgetauscht, über die Bedingungen der nächsten Kämpfe Einstimmigkeit erzielt und der Tag für die notwendige Schlacht festgelegt“ (Twain, 1876, S. 30-31).
