In Folge der geplanten Einführung einer Einheitswährung (Euro) in vielen europäischen Ländern, wurden bereits Mitte der neunziger Jahre Arbeitsvorbereitungen für ein Transeuropäisches-Automatisiertes-Echtzeit-Brutto-Express-Überweisungssystem namens TARGET getroffen (vgl. zu den Ausführungen dieses Absatzes EZB.
