Zusammenfassung
Ziel strukturalistischer Transformationsforschung (vgl. z. B. Moore 1967; Skocpol 1973; Therborn 1977; Vanhanen 1984; Rueschemeyer et al. 1992) ist das Aufdecken und Verstehen der „sozio- und machtstrukturellen Zwänge“ (Giddens 1993), denen politische Transformationsprozesse unterliegen. Dementsprechend geht sie davon aus, dass der Erfolg oder Misserfolg von Demokratisierungs- und Konsolidierungsprozessen in erster Linie von langfristigen Verschiebungen in den Machtstrukturen einer Gesellschaft abhängt. Diese von allen strukturalistischen Ansätzen geteilte Grundannahme entwickelte sich in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren als Gegenposition zur klassischen soziologischen Modernisierungstheorie, der speziell von neomarxistischen Kritikern Machtvergessenheit und ein naiver Fortschrittsglaube vorgeworfen wurde.
