Der weitverbreitete Gebrauch des Begriffs Gründungswahl ist zu einem großen Teil der wegweisenden Studie Transition from Authoritarian Rule von O’Donnell, Schmitter und Whitehead (1986) zu verdanken. In ihrer Untersuchung der Art und Weise, wie aus einer Autokratie eine Demokratie wird, betonen O’Donnell und Schmitter die Bedeutung der ersten freien Wahl nach einer autokratischen Herrschaftsperiode.
