Zusammenfassung

Die Nelkenrevolution einiger Offiziere gegen Portugals marode Diktatur im April 1974 – und somit paradoxerweise ein Militärputsch – steht am Beginn einer Entwicklung, die Samuel P. Huntington im Jahr 1991 mit dem Schlagwort „dritte Welle der Demokratisierung“ nachhaltig belegte. Mit Griechenland (Juli 1974) und Spanien (November 1975) folgten in kürzester Zeit zwei weitere Transitionen, die innerhalb weniger Jahre zu erstaunlich gefestigten Demokratien führten.
