Recommendations

Abstract

A review of policy recommendations given in research to the topics discussed in this thesis illustrates two points: These recommendations are – even though well-minded and generally correct – often too broad to be actually ready-made for implementation in the studied cases (catchphrases: ‘more democracy’, ‘planning for sustainability’, ‘equal access’). Secondly, these recommendations seem to be repeated over and over again. It is not that scholars are lacking creativity or innovation in coming up with new instruments or tools to approach urbanization challenges. Rather, it is that these policy recommendations are not rigid enough or at all implemented in practice. Therefore, it appears that the following recommendations might partly be obvious for the THIP and large infrastructure projects in general. But as was argued before, there are many variables that influence how such infrastructure projects are designed and implemented. A rather technical perspective on policy recommendations therefore needs to be applied to a specific case study and its context. Thus, the focus of this chapter lies on connecting recommendations found in research literature to the conclusions on empirical findings of this thesis – this means that the policy recommendations will be embedded in both their research and practical context.
