Zusammenfassung
Der Beitrag diskutiert den derzeit in den Umweltwissenschaften stark verbreiteten Ansatz der Ökosystemdienstleistungen (ecosystem services) und die in diesem eingenommene Perspektive auf Natur als ‚dienstleistendes Ökosystem‘. Ökosystemdienstleistungen werden durch quantifizierbare Einheiten erfasst, so dass eine Übertragung in monetäre Werte möglich ist. Den Leistungen bzw. den die Leistungen produzierenden Ökosystemen werden Eigentums- oder Nutzungsrechte zugewiesen und es wird ein Markt für diese Leistungen geschaffen. Anders als häufig behauptet, ist dieser Ansatz für die Erhaltung der Artenvielfalt aufgrund seiner Fokussierung auf Nutzen und der Betrachtung von Arten als funktional äquivalent nicht hilfreich, sondern sogar schädlich. Erhebliche Teile der Artenvielfalt müssen als ‚nutzlos‘, ersetzbar oder schädlich und deshalb als nicht schützenswert eingestuft werden. Die Kategorie der kulturellen Dienstleistungen ermöglicht zwar, den Schutz von Arten zu begründen, die für andere Dienstleistungen keine Funktionen erfüllen oder schädlich sind. Allerdings ist diese Kategorie widersprüchlich und inkonsistent: Das, was durch sie erfasst werden soll, sind keine durch Indikatoren messbaren Leistungen oder Eigenschaften eines ökologischen Systems, sondern die Fähigkeit des Subjektes, Natur und Landschaft in ästhetischer und sinnhafter Weise zu erleben und zu beurteilen.
