Abstract
This article examines the impact of innovation on employment growth in innovating SMEs using a quantile regression approach. The key findings are that innovation has a positive effect on employment in both, growing and shrinking firms. The impact of innovation on employee headcounts is much stronger in companies that are already experiencing high growth rates than in their slower growing or shrinking counterparts. Positive employment effects in a broad range of growing and shrinking enterprises can be revealed for process innovators and firms with product imitations. In contrast, positive effects of launching market novelties can only be found in growing firms. Overall, positive employment effects of innovations are not restricted to narrow segments of the economy. They do not only create jobs in growing enterprises, but also work against cutbacks in companies with declining employment. Thus, these results are considerable more optimistic than that of other studies.
