Abstract
In the past two decades South Africa has experienced tremendous social change. The long-lasting fight against the apartheid regime has finally been successful. In 1994, free elections and an equal right to vote as a major path to democracy were introduced and a new government was elected by the people of South Africa. As my colleague Elaine Salo from University of Pretoria, South Africa, has pointed out in her impressive key note address to this conference, the resistance of the African National Congress (ANC) and other social movements in South Africa was carried out to a broad extent by women, who play an important role in political movements in South Africa.
