Abstract

The theoretical background presented within this part of the dissertation highlights both the rising relevance of innovation communities in research and practice (Dahlander & Frederiksen, 2012) as well as the importance of social capital in open innovation settings (Fey & Birkinshaw, 2005). In consequence, a number of scholars on open innovation (Nambisan & Baron, 2010; Rost, 2011) and innovation communities (Dahlander & Frederiksen, 2012; McLure Wasko & Faraj, 2005) have acknowledged social capital as a focal antecedent of performance. For instance, Grewal, Lilien, and Mallapragada (2006) find that network embeddedness of OSS projects positively influences technological project success. As another example, Björk and Magnusson (2009) examine an intraorganizational innovation community and find that while network centrality of an individual is positively related to the quality of submitted ideas, the relationship between network centrality of groups and idea quality follows an inverted U‐shaped pattern.
