Zusammenfassung

Noch bevor die Pest im Jahr 1665 London erreicht, ist sie allgegenwärtig – und zwar in Form des Gerüchts und in Form der Angst, die sich durch Gerüchte verbreitet. Insbesondere die von Mund zu Mund weitergetragenen Berichte der Kaufmänner machen das präsent, was vor Ort noch keine Präsenz hat. Diese von Daniel Defoe (2010: 3) bereits präzise beschriebene Ausbreitungsdynamik sollte in der Folgezeit von den Massenmedien perpetuiert werden.
