Abstract
The paper has a theoretical focus and outlines the epistemological character of visual semiotic means used in elementary stochastics learning. The role of these semiotic means as knowledge-oriented tools will be discussed with respect to Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) and its contribution to the construction of new knowledge. One particular characteristic of the visual semiotic means used in primary school is their reliance on gestures and language as we will illustrate with a few examples taken from a qualitative empirical study with 3rd graders.
