Zusammenfassung
Seit dem Einrichten der ersten kommerziellen Webseiten im Jahr 1993 trat das wirtschaftliche Potential des Internets zunehmend in den Vordergrund. Die Durchdringung des Eigenheims mit Computern und Modems entwickelte sich Ende der 1990er Jahre, als die Telekommunikations-, Computer Hardware- und Software-Industrie in den westlichen Ländern begann, Marketing-Strategien gezielt auch auf das Familienheim auszurichten. Im Zuge dieser Entwicklung installierten mehr und mehr Haushalte eine Internet-Verbindung. Dieser Prozess führte neben der betrieblichen Nutzung zu einer graduellen Aufnahme des Internets in das Eigenheim und in die tägliche Routine von dessen Bewohnern, neben Telefon, Fernsehen sowie Audio- und Video-Geräten.
