Zusammenfassung

Seit den 1960er Jahren befasst sich die empirische Sozialwissenschaft in Deutschland mit dem Phänomen Nachbarschaft, häufig in Bezug auf stadtplanerische Fragen, z. B. ob in neu gebauten Wohngebieten eine nachbarschaftliche Gemeinschaft entsteht und wie dies durch bauliche und politische Maßnahmen begünstigt werden kann (vgl. u. a. Bahr und Gronemeyer 1977; Bertels 1987; Dorsch 1972; Hamm 1973; Vierecke 1972). Heute sind Studien über Nachbarschaften aus der Mode gekommen, was unter anderem daran liegt, dass ihr ein Funktionsverlust bescheinigt wird (vgl. u. a. Hamm 1973; Oswald 1966). Der Zusammenhang von räumlicher Nähe und sozialer Beziehung nimmt durch die wachsenden Möglichkeiten in der Fortbewegung und der Kommunikation sowie anderen technischen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen immer weiter ab (vgl. Melbeck 1993, S. 248).
