Zusammenfassung

Im Laufe ihrer Geschichte haben die USA eine ganz eigentümliche Form von Religiosität entwickelt, die eng mit der Entstehung ihrer nationalen Identität gekoppelt war und ist. In einem komplexen, mehrfach dialektischen Spannungsfeld von calvinistischer Erweckungsreligiosität, protestantischem Mainstream, Katholizismus, Judentum, Säkularismus und Minderheitenreligionen kam es zu einer einzigartigen Fülle rivalisierender und sehr lebendiger religiöser Angebote, die sowohl politisch als auch kulturell und gesellschaftlich Wirkung entfalteten, ohne aber je Gefahr zu laufen, eine Form von Staatskirchentum hervorzubringen.
