Zusammenfassung
American Exceptionalism ist ein Begriff, der sich seit dem 2. Weltkrieg, und insbesondere mit Beginn dieses Jahrhunderts in Politik und Wissenschaft eingebürgert hat, um die Idee einer historischen Sonderrolle der USA zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Mit dem Begriff kann sowohl gemeint sein, dass sich die USA in einer Reihe von Punkten von anderen Nationen unterscheiden, als auch, dass sie anderen Nationen überlegen sind und ihnen daher ein weltgeschichtlich einzigartiger Status zukommt. Diese Überzeugung hat in der Nachkriegszeit das amerikanische Selbstverständnis entscheidend geprägt. Sie hat zu einer neuen „exzeptionalistischen“ Geschichte Amerikas geführt und im Folgenden die US-amerikanische Außenpolitik maßgeblich beeinflusst.
