Zusammenfassung
Da kurz zuvor die erste umfassende Studie von Peter Steinfels (1979) zu der Gruppe der Neokonservativen erschienen ist, in der Bell als ein wichtiger Vertreter genannt worden ist, ist bei dem Erscheinen des Buches „The Winding Passage“ 1980 die Zuordnung Bells (1991a) zu den Neokonservativen schon zu einem feststehenden Begriff geworden. Auch Peter Clecak (1981, S. 221), der das Werk in „Dissent” bespricht, bezeichnet ihn als führende Kraft der Neo-Konservativen und meint, dass auch die Essays belegten würden, dass er „wishes to retain an affiliation: he continues to associate with these intellectuals, to contribute to their journals and participate in their symposia“. Bezeichnenderweise wird aber das Buch und insbesondere seine Kritik der „new Class“-Theorie, die Bell in den Band mit aufgenommen hat, von Michael Novak (1981) gerade von neokonservativer Seite aus in seiner in „Commentary” erscheinenden Besprechung kritisiert.
