Zusammenfassung
Die erste Zeitschrift, die aus dem Umfeld der zweiten Generation der NYI erscheint, ist „Enquiry“, deren Gründung auf eine Spaltung innerhalb der trotzkistischen Bewegung zurückgeht. So kommt es im Herbst 1939 innerhalb der trotzkistischen „Socialist Workers Party“ (SWP) auf Grund des Einmarsches der UdSSR in Finnland zu einem Konflikt, da Trotzki den Angriff unterstützt. Der Kernstreitpunkt ist dabei die Frage, ob die UdSSR, obwohl sie konterrevolutionär ist, trotzdem noch ein Arbeiterstaat sei. Wie schon bei der Skizzierung der Diskussionen in der Alcove 1 kurz angedeutet, vertritt Trotzki (1937) in seinem Buch „The Revolution Betrayed“ die Position, dass das System in der UdSSR ein Übergangsphänomen und deshalb kurzfristig sei. Weil das Eigentum weiterhin sozialisiert sei, nennt er das Land ein „degenerated workers’ state“. Er prognostiziert auch, dass es bald eine Rückkehr zu bürgerlichen Verhältnissen oder einen neuen proletarischen Aufstand geben werde.
