Zusammenfassung
Das Konzept der Pfadabhängigkeit ist in den Sozialwissenschaften weit verbreitet. Es betont die Historizität von Ereignissen und wurde vor allem im Historischen Institutionalismus aufgenommen, um langanhaltende Prozesse zu erklären. Durch die weite Verbreitung ist das ursprünglich aus der Ökonomie stammende Konzept jedoch ausgefasert. In diesem Beitrag wird versucht, drei unterschiedliche Konzeptionen analytisch voneinander zu trennen. Während ein weites Verständnis die Bedeutung einer adäquaten historischen Einbettung hervorhebt, betont ein Konzept mittlerer Reichweite stärker die Sequenz von Ereignissen. Das enge, institutionenökonomisch fundierte Konzept argumentiert hingegen mit steigenden Skalenerträgen, die man für eine sozialwissenschaftliche Erklärung in der empirischen Realität aufzeigen sollte. Die große Stärke des Ansatzes besteht in der Erklärungskraft für institutionelle Langlebigkeit, weist aber trotz jüngster Modifikationen Defizite in der Erklärung von Wandel auf.
