Zusammenfassung
Sehr früh hat Park die Situation ethnischer bzw. „rassischer“ Minderheiten in der US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft untersucht. Es sind vor allem die Konzepte des „marginal man“ und der Hybridität, die von ihm und seinem Schüler Everett V. Stonequist entwickelt wurden und die bis heute von Relevanz sind, um das soziale Phänomen der Migration in seinen verschiedenen Facetten verstehen zu können.

Park benutzt den Begriff „race“, den Christmann (2007, S. 83 ff.) durchgehend mit Rasse übersetzt. Von „race“ war nicht nur zur Zeit von Park im sozialwissenschaftlichen Diskurs in den USA die Rede. Auch im Kontext der Cultural Studies spielt „race“ eine wichtige Rolle. In der Tradition des Pragmatismus stehend, muss Park (und auch Stonequist) die Gefahr einer essentialistischen Verwendung sozialer Konzepte und ihrer Folgen bewusst gewesen sein. Er versteht unter „race“ nach unserer Lesart, die im Folgenden entfaltet wird, eine kulturell verankerte, ethnische Zugehörigkeit. Zweifellos ging es ihm nicht um eine Affirmation rassistischer Vorstellungen.
