Zusammenfassung

Der Autokratievergleich hat in den letzten Jahrzehnten mehrere Konjunkturen durchlaufen. Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg dominierte die Totalitarismusforschung. Die Analyse totalitärer Führer- und Parteiendiktaturen wurde in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren abgelöst vom Konzept des Autoritarismus (Brooker 2009). Mit der „dritten Demokratisierungswelle„ (1974 ff.) geriet die Autoritarismusforschung in den Schatten der Demokratisierungsstudien. Die Analyse nicht-demokratischer Regime blieb relevant, wurde aber vorrangig mit Blick auf die Chancen, Pfade und Herausforderungen der Demokratisierung und Konsolidierung post-autoritärer Regime betrieben (Ulfelder 2005).
