Zusammenfassung

„In der Umwälzung des vorigen Jahrhunderts wurden die alten Genossenschaften der arbeitenden Klassen zerstört, keine neuen Einrichtungen traten zum Ersatz ein, das öffentliche und staatliche Leben entkleidete sich zudem mehr und mehr der […] Sitte und Anschauung, und so geschah es, daß die Arbeiter allmählich der Herzlosigkeit reicher Besitzer und der ungezügelten Habgier der Konkurrenz isoliert und schutzlos überantwortet wurden. Ein gieriger Wucher kam hinzu, um das Übel zu vergrößern, und wenn auch die Kirche zum öfteren dem Wucher das Urteil gesprochen, fährt dennoch Habgier und Gewinnsucht fort, denselben unter einer andern Maske auszuüben. Produktion und Handel sind fast zum Monopol von wenigen geworden, und so konnten wenige übermäßig Reiche einer Masse von Besitzlosen ein nahezu sklavisches Joch auflegen.“
