Contested Issues in the German-Speaking Literary Field

Abstract

Texts, their claim of being works of art, i.e. literature, and ultimately their meaning, are always collectively negotiated. The analysis of conflicts and scandals that are triggered by literary works and by authors’ actions points to effective limits of acceptability of literary articulations in a given social situation.

This paper presents various conflicts and scandals that took place in Germanspeaking countries during the last decades and groups them according to structural aspects such as normative issues, the way a conflict is conducted, the purposes of the involved parties and their choice of means. The investigation aims to reveal the conditions which pre-structure conflicts and scandals as well as the role of literary criticism in this context.
