Zusammenfassung

Der Beitrag thematisiert die Bedeutung und Funktion von fotografischen Bildern während der AIDS-Epidemie in den USA der späten 1980er Jahre. Im Zentrum steht die Repräsentation von sog. People With AIDS, die das Image der Betroffenen und der Epidemie selbst maßgeblich konstruierte. Ein Vergleich von Aufnahmen aus der amerikanischen Presse und Fotografien aus der ersten Gruppenausstellung zu AIDS in New York zeigt auf, dass der persönliche Bezug zur Epidemie entscheidend für die bildliche Deutungshoheit von AIDS war. People With AIDS wurden gesellschaftlich diskriminiert, doch künstlerisch wurde ihnen die Autorität über AIDS zugesprochen.
