Zusammenfassung
Dieser Artikel gibt einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der Methoden, die in der Bevölkerungsforschung Anwendung finden. Ausgehend von den Ursprüngen der die in den Arbeiten von Graunt, Petty und Süßmilch zu finden sind, wird auf die wegweisende Bedeutung der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie für die Weiterentwicklung des Forschungsfelds verwiesen. Die Unterscheidung zwischen der Kohorten- und Periodenperspektive, die u. a. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts durch die Arbeiten von Mannheim und Ryder verstärkt herausgearbeitet wurde, ist ein weiterer Meilenstein in der Weiterentwicklung des Fachs. Wichtige jüngere Entwicklungsschritte sind die Ereignisdatenanalyse und die Mehrebenen-Modellierung. Die Möglichkeiten kausale Effekte über „Frailty-Modelle“ zu isolieren, werden kritisch diskutiert. Weiterhin werden die mit den verschiedenen Methoden verbundenen Möglichkeiten der Überwindung der ontologischen Differenz von Teil und Ganzem erörtert.
