Abstract

During the last decade, much attention has been given to carcinoid tumor which constitutes a clinical and pathologic entity of neoplasms derived from Kultschitzky cells or their precursors. At one time it was considered a harmless benign growth. That opinion changed, however, with discovery that carcinoid produces 5-hydroxytryptamine, known as serotonin. The metabolite is related to the production of a group of symptoms in the malignant carcinoid syndrome including flushing, diarrhea, asthmatic attacks, valvular heart disease, dermatologic manifestations and psychiatric phenomena. The manifestations are extremely variable ranging from the clinically more or less benign carcinoid to the sometimes highly malignant ileal carcinoid. Because of their slow growth, these tumors were originally thought to be of low malignancy. They do, however, exhibit the characteristics of local invasion and distant spread, and are recognized as potentially malignant lesions (Kantor et al, 1961).
