Abstract

A number of comprehensive reviews has been devoted to the function of acetylcholine (ACh) in the central nervous system (C.N.S.) (Feldberg1945, 1950, Symposium on Neurohumoral Transmission 1954, Perry 1956). The reviews mustered the evidence regarding cholinergic mechanisms in the C.N.S. Frequently, results obtained with anticholinesterase (anti-ChE) agents are included in these reviews as supportive of cholinergic transmission. The same applies to numerous original contributions dealing with cholinergic transmission of impulses in the brain; few investigations have been devoted exclusively to study of the effects of anti-ChE agents on the C.N.S. The only complete review of the pharmacology of anti-ChE agents presently available is the excellent one by Holmstedt (1959) which, however, does not include cholinesterase (ChE) inhibitors other than organophosphorus compounds.

The authors express their gratitude to Miss Peggy J. Davis for her assistance in the literature search.
