Summary

Usually, queueing theory is not directly concerned with optimization. In this paper a finite birth-death process is investigated, where costs depend on service rates and on the number of customers waiting.

The queueing system is controlled by the service rates. Optimal service rates are computed by a policy-iteration method, derived from a functional analytic maximum principle.
