Zusammenfassung
Bei der theoretischen Behandlung der Absorptionserscheinungen mußte man sich von Anfang an auf den Boden der Quantentheorie stellen, eine auch nur qualitative Deutung des Grundphänomens der Absorption, nämlich der Photoemission, unter Zugrundelegung klassischer Vorstellungen, ist nicht möglich. Ganz im Gegensatz hierzu hat sich auf dem Gebiet der Zerstreuungserscheinungen die klassische Theorie als geeignet erwiesen, von den wesentlichsten Zügen Rechenschaft zu geben. Erst die Entdeckung des Comptoneffektes und der damit zusammenhängenden Phänomene haben gezeigt, daß auch hier Quantenbeziehungen eingreifen; es handelt sich hierbei gewissermaßen um eine quantentheoretische Verfeinerung des Bildes, welches die klassische Theorie jedenfalls in großen Zügen, teilweise sogar exakt richtig gegeben hatte. Die folgende Darstellung soll deshalb so gehalten werden, daß zunächst die klassische Zerstreuungstheorie als Plattform für die Diskussion der experimentellen Resultate dient, soweit dies möglich ist. Sie wurde begründet durch J. J. Thomson, während auf experimentellem Gebiet wieder das umfangreiche Werk von Barkla und seinen Mitarbeitern richtungangebend war. Erst später werden dann diejenigen Beobachtungen berücksichtigt werden, welche zur quantentheoretischen Modifikation der Theorie zwangen.

Bd. 27, S. 637. 1926), bei welchem der Streukörper mit zwei getrennten Röntgenröhren bestrahlt wurde, dürfte nicht entscheidend sein, denn es läßt sich leicht zeigen, daß unter den erreichbaren Versuchsbedingungen die einzelnen, nicht kohärenten Wellenzüge der beiden Röhren so kurz und ihre mittleren Abstände so groß sind, daß sie praktisch niemals zur Interferenz miteinander kommen.
