Zusammenfassung
Die Entstehung der Atomspektren wurde durch Bewegungen bzw. Sprünge von Elektronen erklärt. Dabei wurde der Atomkern als ruhend angenommen. Bei den zweiatomigen Molekülen kommen zu der Elektronenbewegung zwei neue Bewegungsmöglichkeiten hinzu: 1. eine Rotation der Kerne um ihren gemeinsamen Schwerpunkt, 2. eine Schwingung der Kerne um die Ruhelage in Richtung ihrer Verbindungslinie, denn sie sind nicht starr miteinander verbunden. Es liegt nun die Annahme nahe, daß sich die molekulare Energie dementsprechend aus drei Bestandteilen zusammensetzt, deren jeder für sich nur diskrete Werte annehmen kann: 1. Energie der Rotation, 2. Energie der Kernschwingung, 3. Energie der Elektronenbewegung. Es ist der Anteil der Rotationsenergie klein gegen den der Schwingungsenergie und dieser wieder klein gegen den der Elektronenenergie.
