Zusammenfassung
Unter den Begriff „Sternhaufen“ wird man zunächst jede Gruppe von Sternen rechnen, die sich an der Sphäre durch ihre größere Konzentration aus ihrer näheren Umgebung abhebt. Die scheinbare Ausdehnung und mehr noch die äußere Form einer Gruppe kann erheblich variieren. Die Gestalt der Haufen am Himmel, d. h. ihr Aussehen im Fernrohr oder auf der photographischen Platte, wurde als erstes Kriterium zu einer Einteilung der Haufen benutzt. Die Zunahme der Genauigkeit astronomischer Messungen, insbesondere die Zunahme bekannter Eigenbewegungen von Sternen, führte zur Entdeckung einer ganz anderen Art von Sternhaufen, der „Sternschwärme“, Gruppen von Sternen mit gemeinsamer Bewegung im Raum. Dabei brauchen die Sterne eines Schwarmes im allgemeinen keineswegs auf einem engbegrenzten Flächenstück der Sphäre zu stehen. Zum „Bärenstrom“ gehören z. B. β Urs. maj., γ Urs. maj., δ Urs. maj., ε Urs. maj., ζ Urs. maj., β Eridani, β Aurigae, α Coronae, α Can. maj. Durch Melotte, Bailey und Shapley wurde eine Einteilung der Sterngruppen in drei. Klassen vorgeschlagen: 1. globular clusters, 2. open clusters, 3. moving clusters. Als für die einzelnen Klassen typische Haufen seien genannt: Klasse 1: Messier 13, Klasse 2: Messier 37, Klasse 3 : Taurusstrom. Tafel I, II und III zeigen Aufnahmen charakteristischer Haufen. Das Studium der dritten Klasse von Sternhaufen, der Sternschwärme, ist ein völlig anderes als das der kugelförmigen oder sooffenen Haufen.
