Abstract
Security is a central issue with smart cards. Security protocols protect access to data on the smart card through secure messaging. Additionally, they allow the off-card application to use cryptographic algorithms and keys stored on the smart card for digitally signing data and signature verification. Implementing a smart card security concept requires dealing with environmental and legal constraints as well as with smart card specifics.
