Melanocytic Lesions

Abstract

Melanotic spots, melanocytic nevi, and malignant melanomas are one of the most important areas of dermatology. Melanomas are the only common, potentially life-threatening disorder that involves the skin and thus are worthy of careful attention. While most nevi as defined in Chapter 52 are stable and only rarely undergo change, the same cannot be said of melanocytic nevi. About 20–30% of malignant melanomas arise from melanocytic nevi; in addition, these nevi typically change throughout the life of the patient, being subject to genetic, hormonal, environmental (sunlight), and many other less well-understood factors. For the balance of the chapter, the term nevus will be equated with melanocytic nevus. We will not employ the terms nevus cell or nevocyte; the cells in a melanocytic nevus are in fact melanocytes, and the use of this historic term is confusing.
