Abstract
The rickettsiae are a group of fastidious bacteria that are intracellular parasites; therefore, they occupy a niche between traditional bacteria and viruses. In recent years, a number of new rickettsiae have been discovered — as many as seven new species have been found ranging from sites as exotic as Flinders Island (Australia) to California.
