Zusammenfassung
Die Hauptaufgabe des Immunsystems ist die Abwehr von Infektionen. Werden Babies mit einem Defekt in einem entscheidenden Teilbereich dieses Systems geboren, leiden sie fortwährend an Infektionen und sterben in vielen Fällen, wenn modernste medizinische Einrichtungen nicht zur Verfügung stehen. Niedriger entwickelte Tierarten besitzen sogenannte angeborene oder unspezifische Immunmechanismen, wie Phagozytose, die einen Schutz gegen infektiöse Keime bieten. Darüber hinaus haben höher entwickelte Tiere eine adaptive, d. h. erworbene Immunantwort im Laufe der Evolution entwickelt, die eine flexible, spezifische und wesentlich wirksamere Reaktion gegenüber verschiedenen Infektionen garantiert.
