Abstract
In clinical research the issue of the administration of a scale in terms of observer ratings (scales administered by a skilled observer after an interview with the patient) versus self-rating scales (questionnaires to be completed by the patients themselves) has often been discussed. In mental disorders with reduced verbal capacity (e.g. dementia and mental handicaps) or reduced insight (e.g. schizophrenia, mania, and aggressiveness) the use of questionnaires is obviously very limited.
