Zusammenfassung
Für die Lebenserwartung und Lebensqualität des Diabetikers sind die im Zusammenhang mit der Zuckerkrankheit auftretenden Spätkomplikationen von überragender Bedeutung. Eine gute Stoffwechseleinstellung kann i. allg. die Entstehung dieser Spätschäden verzögern, sie aber nicht vollständig verhindern oder gar rückgängig machen. Der diabetesspezifischen Mikroangiopathie, die sich an Nerv, Retina, Niere und anderen Organen manifestiert, steht die Makroangiopathie gegenüber, die aus der Sicht des Pathologen der Arteriosklerose des Nichtdiabetikers entspricht, jedoch beim Diabetiker gehäuft und frühzeitiger auftritt. Das Verständnis der molekularen biochemischen Zusammenhänge, die der Entstehung der diabetischen Spätkomplikationen zugrunde liegen, dient der klinischen Einschätzung von Risikoprofilen sowie der Erschließung künftiger Therapieformen.
