Zusammenfassung

Diabetes mellitus ist ein klinisches Syndrom, dessen mittlere Häufigkeit in den westlichen Industriestaaten auf 2,5% bis 4% geschätzt wird. Alters- (über 65 Jahre > 14%) und populationsabhängig (Pima-Indianer: 35%) kann die Prävalenz allerdings auf wesentlich höhere Werte ansteigen (WHO: 50–89 Jahre, postprandial pathologische Blutglukose: Frauen 11,8%, Männer 14,8%). Der relative Anteil des nicht insulinabhängigen Diabetes (Typ II, international NIDDM, s. Kap. 2) an der Gesamtprävalenz der Zuckerkrankheit beträgt 85–90% [15], so daß nur ein kleiner Anteil (10–15%) dem primär insulinabhängigen Diabetes (Typ I, international IDDM, s. Kap. 2) zuzuordnen ist.
