Zusammenfassung

Von Tscherne u. Trentz [180] wurde die folgende Definition des Polytraumas vorgeschlagen: „Es handelt sich um eine gleichzeitige Verletzung mehrerer Körperregionen oder Organsysteme, wobei wenigstens eine Verletzung oder die Kombination mehrerer Verletzungen lebensbedrohlich ist.“ Klinisch hat sich bewährt, in diese Definition auch Patienten mit schweren Verletzungen nur einer Körperregion einzubeziehen, z. B. ein isoliertes schweres Schädel-Hirn-Trauma oder ein isoliertes schweres Thoraxtrauma. Die Problematik im Rahmen der Erstversorgung ist die gleiche, außerdem können zusätzliche Verletzungen anderer Körperregionen in der Regel nicht ausgeschlossen werden. Wichtig ist festzuhalten, daß die Diagnose Polytrauma per definitionem eine akute Lebensbedrohung beinhaltet.
