Zusammenfassung

The general characteristics of direct (nonresonant) threshold multiphoton ionization of atoms are presented in Chap. 1. We emphasize once more that this direct process of ionization is most important for moderate electromagnetic fields. The frequency ranges where intermediate resonances occur are much narrower than those spanning the separation between atomic levels. The resonance frequencies change slowly due to the AC-Stark shift; tuning of the radiation frequency is required for resonance to appear. Thus, direct multiphoton ionization of atoms occurs at most radiation frequencies spanning the broad range.
