Electronic Structure of Surfaces

Abstract

The surface of a solid, breaking the crystal three-dimensional periodicity, introduces strong modifications into the electronic structure in its vicinity. It is clear that, in principle, the electronic structure is related to the atomic structure (and vice versa) and, consequently, both structures should be determined simultaneously and self-consistently in a complete theory. At the present time, such a theory is still to come, except in some particular cases, and, in this chapter, we will assume that the atomic structure is known unless otherwise stated.
